Common elements that are useful for SEO

Sitemaps- list of files that help engines review your site.

  • XML- Extensible Markup Language, which is the most recommended format out of all the options. It’s the most used format for sitemaps.
  • RSS- Rich site summary or really simple syndication, it’s easy to maintain but harder to manage because of constant updates.
  • Txt- Text file, is very very easy to use, but doesn’t let you add Meta data to your pages.

Robots.txt- file that gives instructions to search engines. Stored in root directory of website.

Some commands that you can use are: Disallow, Sitemap, & crawl delay.

Meta Robots- this tag is page specific instructions for bots. It’s included in the head section of the HTML document.

Rel= “Nofollow” is best used when you link to an untrusted website.

Rel= “Canonical” used for when you have multiple URLs with copies of the same exact content. It tells search engines which page is the primary page.
